A simple trick to hide contents in a jpgHere is a simple tutorial on how to hide files in Jpg's. It's NOT a trick for novel secret agents, but a simple (and old) way to hide some files in an image just for play ;)

The information is stored in plain text but it's still cool to play with. A simple solution to make this more secure, is to use encryption on the RAR file when your create it, but as I said before it's just a play... The idea is to show how files can be 'slammed' together, to stop the average PC user from finding them.

We need:

  • - Windows XP (Win 2k and, probably Vista, too!)
  • - Basic Knowledge of the Command Prompt (old dos memories)
  • - Winrar

First, we have to add the files we want to hide into a new RAR archive

we can put on it several files

Go to the folder where your files are located, in this case 'C:\temp'

our winrar file

Type 'copy /b c_tree.jpg + desktop.rar bg_snow.jpg' where  c_tree.jpg is the original picture, desktop.rar is the file to be hidden (see picture above), and hide_rar.jpg is the file which contains both.

Now we test the JPG by opening it, and verifying it still opens. If it does, try opening the file with WinRar! Here is the image I created when making this tutorial!

Here is the file with the rar archive hidden on it!
